It’s almost the holidays, and that means one thing: home tours! This time of year, homes all over Charlotte open their doors for neighbors and the general public alike to ooh and ahh at their architecture, décor, and festive spirit. The good news? Charlotte has home tours all year round, and these are just a few of our favorites.
Friends of the Fourth Ward Holiday Home Tour
This might be our favorite tour of the year, if only because it’s so darn festive. Friends of the Fourth Ward, a cooperative in Uptown’s oldest neighborhood, have been putting on this tour for almost 40 years. For the price of a ticket visitors get a walking map and access to about a dozen homes in Uptown – they range from sky-high condos to Victorian estates – all decorated for the holidays. And, bonus, many of the city’s best restaurants provide food samples for tour goers to boot!

Charlotte Parade of Homes
This particular tour is a little different because it’s meant to sell homes as much as it is to show them off. For several weekends in a row, usually in the fall, new home builders all over Charlotte open their model homes for visitors at no cost. Prospective home buyers will see what’s on the market, which new neighborhoods will pop up, and more, and current homeowners can get some great decorating ideas from model homes in the area!

Mad About Modern Home Tour
This tour isn’t quite “annual” yet but it’s happened a couple times in the last few years, so stay on the lookout. For the price of a ticket, visitors will be treated to some of the best examples of mid-century modern architecture in the city; real homes lived in by real Charlotteans. Expect to see about 6-8 homes, all in the Southpark/South Charlotte area and some killer furniture to boot.

Dilworth Home Tour
The Dilworth Neighborhood Association has been hosting its own neighborhood homes tour for over 44 years now, and it’s one for the books! Dilworth has some of the best craftsman-style architecture in town, and residents here know good design. The best part? Not only will the price of a ticket get you into nearly a dozen Dilworth homes, the proceeds go to neighborhood events like the Dilworth Jubilee and to organizations such as Historic Charlotte.

Secret Gardens Tour
Do the Friends of Fourth Ward know how to put on a home tour or what? In its infancy, the “Friends of Fourth Ward Secret Gardens Tour” is one of the most unique in the city. Held in the spring, the tour allows visitors access to private courtyards, historic homes, and public art in the historical Fourth Ward neighborhood. Also, sometimes local breweries hand out beer samples inside the gardens themselves!
